TREAT YO SELF – A Young Entrepreneur’s Guide to Staying Sane With A Crazy Schedule

Staying Busy Helps Me Get More Work Done

I never thought this would be true in my life. Ever. I tend to lead a busy life, but since starting this internship, I have become so much busier than I could have ever imagined. I feel like I am constantly running around with no breaks. Sometimes I don’t sit down for homework until 9:30 at night because I am so busy with other things. But honestly, I have never felt more productive and more efficient in my entire life.

My weekly schedule goes a little something like this:

sched

What you don’t see on this schedule is that my golf practice typically goes until about 6pm every weekday. I also have sorority meetings every Monday evening from 8:00pm-9:00pm, and typically one or two evenings a week, I have other sorority events. Throughout the month of October, I have also been travelling for golf tournaments every weekend. I am also a senior in college carrying 12 credit hours that actually feels more like 18 with the amount of work I do for each class. I think it is safe to say I am overwhelmingly busy.

Living by this busy schedule has actually helped me more than hurt me. I have learned so much more about effective time management and have actually become more efficient in the process. Because of my limited “free” time during the day, I have learned how to more effectively get more work done throughout my day, especially my homework (I have a lot of it!). I have also learned to be more appreciative of the little bits of “free” time that I currently get. Free time is a commodity in my busy life, so getting just 30 minutes to take a nap or catch up on my TV shows has become something I really appreciate.

I have also learned a lot of valuable life lessons by leading this busy life. I’ll give you a couple key ones that you can even apply to your own busy life.

Find That Thing That Keeps You Going

In the course of leading this busy schedule, I have learned to find that thing that keeps me going, that thing that keeps me looking forward to each new day. For me, that is this internship at Pure Pursuit. I. LOVE. IT. On my days that I am at Pure Pursuit, I enjoy every second that I am there. What is really cool about this internship for me is that I can see my passion for marketing developing right before my own eyes. On the days that I am not at Pure Pursuit, I am wishing that I am there. I spend those days looking forward to the next time I am at Pure Pursuit or bragging to other people about how cool my internship is. I love the question “How is your internship going?” because I get to essentially brag about my work, the environment I work in, and the awesome people I work with. This internship gets me excited and really keeps me going. I mean, what young entrepreneur wouldn’t love coming to the Crossroads District here in Kansas City to a dealership like this, with so much technology and rare performance cars? Pure Pursuit is doing it like nowhere else.

Taking Breaks is Important

This is a lesson I have learned the hard way. There are nights where I literally cannot focus on homework because I have been doing so much that day. Those are the nights that I have to take breaks from homework in order to refresh my brain. I usually spend those nights on Netflix or on FaceTime with my family and our puppy (She loves to FaceTime with me! See the photo below!). Taking mental breaks when I can actually helps me come back to my homework feeling rested and refreshed and makes me more efficient in completing the work.

TREAT. YO. SELF.

If you have ever watched Parks and Recreation, you know what I am talking about. Every year, a few of the main characters in this show take breaks from their busy lives and have a “Treat Yo Self” Day; this is a day they spend pampering themselves and buying things that they want. I have learned that sometimes this is necessary in my own life. Sometimes I have to reward myself for all the hard work I have been doing. Treating myself sometimes consists of going shopping, but a lot of times I treat myself with food that I normally would not get otherwise. It gives me the chance to reward myself for all my hard work and makes me feel like all the hard work was worth it. We see this all the time at Pure Pursuit. Our Customers need a car, but they may not “need” all that our cars have to offer (I mean have you seen our 2012 CL65 AMG for Sale? No one “needs” that level of awesomeness. It’s a reward). It’s more than just practicality, it’s about enjoying the fruits of your labor. So, if you have been working hard lately and you feel like you need a break—TREAT YO SELF!

And Most Importantly: Sometimes You Just Have to Forget Due Dates and Live Life

Sometimes you have to forget due dates and just live life a little because it will be worth it in the long run. I have found this to be very true. Sometimes I get so wrapped up in my busy life that I forget to spend time with those people closest to me. I feel like I haven’t spent much time at all with my Zeta sisters this year because of how busy I have been. I haven’t seen my parents but three times this semester because I have been so busy. I came to this realization last weekend at a golf tournament when my parents were there (they made an eight-hour drive to watch me in St. Louis!): I have been so wrapped up in my busy life that I have neglected the people who mean the most to me. What I seemed to have forgotten this year is that homework can be done later; life cannot. Nothing is more important than living the life you have. You only have one life to live, so live it with no regrets. I spent last weekend hanging out with my parents (when I wasn’t on the golf course, obviously) rather than doing the immense amount of homework I had to get done that weekend because I only get so much time with my parents. Homework— that can be done later. Living life and spending time with those that mean the most to me cannot. So my advice to you here is that even if you have a stack of work to get done, sometimes that can wait. Spend time with loved ones. Go to dinner with a friend you haven’t seen in months. Take your kids to the park. Take that long road trip in your favorite Sport Luxury ride. Your work can wait; life cannot.
